세미나 할 때 말로 설명하면서 이 괘를 이해하는 것과 오로지 글로써 이 괘를 보여주는 것이 쉽지 않음을 다시 한번 절감했습니다.

 

42. 風雷益 / I / Increase

풍뢰익 / ‘益’의 영어식 발음 ‘이’ / 더함(성장, 증진, 증가)

The idea of increase is expressed in the fact that the strong lowest line of the upper trigram has sunk down and taken its place under the lower trigram.

풍뢰익괘는 상괘의 강하고 가장 아래에 있는 효가 밑으로 내려가서 하괘의 자리를 대신하는 것으로 표현됩니다.

This conception also expresses the fundamental idea on which the Book of Changes is based. To rule truly is to serve.

이러한 개념은 ‘역경’의 토대가 되는 근본적인 사상을 표현합니다. 진심으로 다스린다는 것은 섬기는 것입니다.

A sacrifice of the higher element that produces an increase of the lower is called an out-and-out increase: it indicates the spirit that alone has power to help the world.

아래의 더함(성장, 증진)을 생산하기 위한 위에 있는 집단의 희생을 완전한 더함(성장, 증가)이라 부릅니다. 이것은 홀로 세상을 도울 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있는 정신을 나타냅니다.

 

 

The Judgment 괘사

 

 

INCREASE. It furthers one

To undertake something.

더함(성장, 증진). 어떤 것을 수행하는 것은 이롭습니다.

It furthers one to cross the great water.

큰 물을 건너는 것은 이롭습니다.

 

 

Sacrifice on the part of those above for the increase of those below fills the people with a sense of joy and gratitude that is extremely valuable for the flowering of the commonwealth.

아래에 있는 집단의 더함(성장, 증진)을 위한 위에 있는 집단의 희생은 사람들로 하여금 기쁘고 감사한 마음으로 가득 채웁니다. 이것은 공공의 복지를 꽃피우기 위해 매우 가치 있는 것입니다.

When people are thus devoted to their leaders, undertakings are possible, and even difficult and dangerous enterprises will succeed.

그래서 사람들은 그들의 지도자에게 헌신합니다. 중요한 일이 가능하고 심지어 힘들고 어려운 일(프로젝트) 또한 성공할 것입니다.

Therefore in such times of progress and successful development it is necessary to work and make the best use of time.

This time resembles that of the marriage of heaven and earth, when the earth partakes of the creative power of heaven, forming and bringing forth living beings.

이 시기는 땅이 하늘의 창조적인 힘을 받아 생명을 만들고 낳는 땅과 하늘의 결합과 닮아있습니다.

The time of INCREASE does not endure, therefore it must be utilized while it lasts.

더함(성장, 증진)의 시기는 지속되지 않기에 이 시기를 반드시 활용해야 합니다.

Wind and thunder: the image of INCREASE.

바람과 우레: 더함(성장, 증진)의 이미지입니다.

Thus the superior man:

그래서 군자란

If he sees good, he imitates it;

만약 선을 본다면 그것을 모방하고:

If he has faults, he rids himself of them.

만약 결점을 가진다면 그는 그것을 없앱니다.

 

 

While observing how thunder and wind increase and strengthen each other, a man can note the way to self-increase and self-improvement.

우레와 바람이 어떻게 서로를 증가하고 강화하는지 관찰하는 동안 인간은 자기 증진(더함, 성장)과 자기 향상의 길을 알아차릴 수 있습니다.

When he discovers good in others, he should imitate it and thus make everything on earth his own.

다른 사람에게서 선을 발견할 때 그것을 모방(본받아야)하여야 합니다. 그래서 세상(땅)의 모든 것을(선을) 자신의 것으로 만들어야 합니다.

If he perceives something bad in himself, let him rid himself of it. In this way he becomes free of evil.

This ethical change represents the most important increase of personality.

The Lines 효사

 

 

Nine at the beginning means:

초구효는 의미합니다.

It furthers one to accomplish great deeds.

큰 일을(대업)을 성취하는 것은 이롭습니다.

Supreme good fortune. No blame.

최고로 길하고 허물이 없습니다.

 

If great help comes to a man from on high, this increased strength must be used to achieve something great for which he might otherwise never have found energy, or readiness to take responsibility.

만약 높은 곳에서 큰 도움이 오면 더함(증진, 성장)의 힘은 위대한 것을 달성하기 위해 사용해야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 그는 위대한 것을 달성할 에너지나 책임을 질 마음의 준비를 발견하지 못할지도 모릅니다.

Great good fortune is produced by selflessness, and in bringing about great good fortune, he remains free of reproach.

Six in the second place means:

육이효는 의미합니다.

Someone does indeed increase him;

Ten pairs of tortoises cannot oppose it.

Constant perseverance brings good fortune.

끊임없는 인내는 길합니다.

The king presents him before God.

길합니다.

 

 

A man brings about real increase by producing in himself the conditions for it, that is, through receptivity to and love of the good.

인간은 진정한 더함(성장, 증진)을 위해서는 스스로 그것을 위한 조건들을 만들 수 있어야 합니다. 즉, 선에 대한 수용과 사랑을 통해 진정한 더함(성장, 증진)은 가능합니다.

Thus the thing for which he strives comes of itself, with the inevitability of natural law.

따라서 그가 노력(추구)하는 것은 자연의 법칙에 따라 자연스럽게 옵니다.

Where increase is thus in harmony with the highest laws of the universe, it cannot be prevented by any constellation of accidents.

더함(성장, 증진)이 우주의 가장 높은 법칙과의 조화 속에 있다면 그 어떠한 기상천외한 사건이 벌어지더라도 막을 수 없습니다.

But everything depends on his not letting unexpected good fortune make him heedless; he must make it his own through inner strength and steadfastness.

그러나 모든 것은 그가 예상치 못한 행운을 부주의하게 다루지 않는 것에(대하도록 두지 않는 것에) 달려있습니다. 그는 내면의 힘과 확고함으로 그 행운을 자신의 것으로 만들어야 합니다.

Then he acquires meaning before God and man, and can accomplish something for the good of the world.

Six in the third place means:

육삼효는 의미합니다.

One is enriched through unfortunate events.

No blame, if you are sincere

And walk in the middle,

And report with a seal to the prince.

만약 당신이 진실하고 중도를 걷고 왕에게 인장을 가지고 보고한다면 허물이 없습니다.

 

A time of blessing and enrichment has such powerful effects that even events ordinarily unfortunate must turn out to the advantage of those affected by them.

축복과 풍요의 시기는 아주 강력한 효과를 가지고 있습니다. 불행한 사건일지라도 그 시기에 영향을 받은 사람들에게는 반드시 이익이 있습니다.

These persons become free of error, and by acting in harmony with truth they gain such inner authority that they exert influence as if sanctioned by the letter and seal.

이 사람들은 실수로부터 자유롭고, 진리와 조화를 이루어 행동하여 마치 문서와 인장으로 공신력을 승인받는 것처럼 그들이 영향력을 행사할 수 있는 내적 권위를 얻게 됩니다.

 

 

Six in the fourth place means:

육사효는 의미합니다.

If you walk in the middle 

And report to the prince

만약 당신이 중도를 걸으며 왕에게 보고하면

He will follow.

그는 따를 것입니다.

It furthers one to be used

In the removal of the capital.

수도를 이전한 데 쓰이는 것이 이롭습니다.

 

 

It is important that there should be men who mediate between leaders and followers.

지도자와 그를 따르는 자 사이를 중재하는 사람이 중요합니다.

These should be disinterested people, especially in times of increase, since the benefit is to spread from the leader to the people.

이 사람들은 사욕이 없고 청렴해야 합니다. 특히 더함(증진, 성장)의 시기에는 더욱 그러합니다. 왜냐하면 위로부터 아래로 이익이 널리 퍼져나가야 하기 때문입니다.

Nothing of this benefit should be held back in a selfish way; it should really reach those for whom it is intended.

이익의 어떠한 부분도 이기적인 방식으로 따로 챙기거나 빼돌리면 안 됩니다. 이 이익은 전달되어야 하는 사람들에게 정말로 제대로 전달되어야 합니다.

This sort of intermediary, who also exercises a good influence on the leader, is especially important in times when it is a matter of great undertakings, decisive for the future and requiring the inner assent of all concerned.

이런 종류의 중재자는 지도자에게도 역시 좋은 영향력을 행사합니다. 특히 아주 큰 사업을 벌이는 시기, 미래를 위해 결정적이며 관련된 모든 사람의 내적인 동의가 필요할 때 이러한 중재자는 더욱 중요합니다.

 

 

Nine in the fifth place means:

구오효는 의미합니다.

If in truth you have a kind heart, ask not.

만약 당신이 진심으로 친절한 마음을 가지고 있다면 요구하지(묻지) 않습니다.

Supreme good fortune.

대단히 길합니다.

Truly, kindness will be recognized as your virtue. 

진실로 친절은 당신의 미덕으로 여겨질 것입니다.

 

True kindness does not count upon nor ask about merit and gratitude but acts from inner necessity.

진정한 친절은 상과 감사를 기대하거나 요구하지 않고 내적 필요성에 의해 행합니다.

And such a truly kind heart finds itself rewarded in being recognized, and thus the beneficent influence will spread unhindered.

그리고 그러한 진정으로 친절한 마음은 인정받는 것, 그 자체로 보상을 받은 것입니다. 그리하여 그 자비로운 영향력은 방해받지 않고 퍼져 나갈 것입니다.

 

 

Nine at the top means:

상구효는 의미합니다.

He brings increase to no one.

그는 어느 누구에게도 더함(증진, 성장)을 주지 않습니다.(가져오지 않습니다)

Indeed, someone even strikes him.

게다가 누군가가 그를 때리기조차 합니다.

He does not keep his heart constantly steady.

그는 마음을 꾸준하게 유지하지 않습니다.

Misfortune.

길하지 않습니다.

 

 

The meaning here is that through renunciation those in high place should bring increase to those below.

이 부분의 의미는 위에 있는 사람들이 자기 것을 포기함으로써 아래에 있는 사람들에게 더함(증진, 성장)을 주어야 한다는 것을 의미합니다.

By neglecting this duty and helping no one, they in turn lose the furhtering influence of others and soon find themselves alone.

이러한 의무를 게을리하고 아무도 도와주지 않는다면 그들은 다른 사람에 대한 영향력을 잃게 되고 홀로 남게 될 것입니다.

In this way they invite attacks.

이렇게 되면 그들은 외부로부터 공격을 받게 됩니다.

An attitude not permanently in harmony with the demands of the time will necessarily bring misfortune with it.

이렇게 시대의 요구와 영구적으로 조화를 이루지 않는 태도는 반드시 불운을 가져올 것입니다.

Confucius says about this line:

공자는 이 효에 대해 다음과 같이 말합니다.

 

 

The superior man sets his person at rest before he moves; he composes his mind before he speaks; he makes his relations firm before he asks for something.

군자는 움직이기 전에 일단 몸(person, 사람이 아님)을 안정시킵니다; 그는 말하기 전에 마음을 안정시킵니다; 그는 누군가에게 요구를 하기 전에 그 사람과의 관계를 우선 확고하게 합니다.

By attending to these three matters, the superior man gains complete security.

이러한 세 가지 사항에 주의를 기울임으로써 군자는 완벽한 안전을 얻게 됩니다.

But if a man is brusque in his movements, others will not cooperate.

그러나 만약 이 사람이 너무 무뚝뚝하고 거칠게 행동한다면 다른 사람은 협조하지 않을 것입니다.

If he is agitated in his word, they awaken no echo in others.

만약 그의 말이 흔들리면(동요하다, 왔다갔다하다) 다른 사람에게 영향을 끼칠 수가 없습니다.

If he asks for something without having first established relations, it will not be given to him.

만약 그가 이런 관계를 먼저 만들지 않고 다른 사람에게 뭔가를 요구한다면 그는 얻지 못할 것입니다.

If no one is with him, those who would harm him draw near.

만약 주위에 아무도 없다면, 오히려 그를 해치려고 하는 사람들이 모여들 것입니다.
